Hans Lievens (Turnhout, 1984) is a researcher at Ghent University, investigating how we can use satellite observations to observe snow mass in mountain regions. He is also founder of Snowcap, a start-up company providing real-time snow monitoring for hydropower operations. Hans studied Bio-Science Engineering and received a Ph.D. from Ghent University in 2011, with a thesis on satellite observation of soil moisture. Since 2012, he has been post-doctoral research scientist, studying the use of satellite observations and models to improve our understanding of the water cycle. In 2016-2017, he joined the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and started with research on snow remote sensing, after participating to the NASA SnowEx’17 field campaign in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Since then, first as a scientist at KU Leuven and later at Ghent University, he has continued his work to advance methods for snow remote sensing, and participated to several field measurement campaigns, including in Colorado, Idaho, Alaska and Switzerland.
