Professor
Lund University (Sweden)
Buon Kiong Lau received the B.Eng. degree with first-class honors from the University of Western Australia in 1998 and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Curtin University of Technology, Australia, in 2003. From 2000 to 2001, he was a Research Engineer with Ericsson Research, Kista, Sweden. Since 2004, he has been with Lund University, Sweden, where he is currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical and Information Technology, Division Head, and Deputy Department Head.
Prof. Lau’s research interests span antennas, propagation, and multi-antenna techniques for wireless communications, with particular emphasis on MIMO systems, over-the-air testing, compact and wideband antennas, characteristic modes, and millimeter-wave and sub-THz systems. He has contributed significantly to the theoretical and experimental understanding of multi-antenna system performance and has authored or coauthored more than 200 scientific publications in international journals and conferences.
Prof. Lau has held numerous leadership positions within the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society (AP-S). He served as an Associate Editor, Senior Associate Editor, and inaugural Track Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation from 2010 to 2016 and received the journal’s award for exceptional performance as an Associate Editor during 2014–2015. He is currently a Senior Editor of the IEEE Open Journal on Antennas and Propagation and the IEEE Journal of Selected Topics on Electromagnetics, Antennas and Propagation (JSTEAP). He also served as an AP-S Distinguished Lecturer from 2017 to 2019 and is an elected member of the AP-S Administrative Committee.
In 2014, Prof. Lau founded the international Characteristic Modes Special Interest Group (CM-SIG), which today includes nearly 120 participating research groups and companies worldwide. He was elevated to IEEE Fellow for contributions to multi-antenna systems and wireless propagation research.
