The ELLIIT Focus Period on Wireless Sensing Technologies for Emerging Applications, hosted at Linköping University, brings together researchers from around the world to explore the latest developments in wireless sensing.

As part of the program, a three-day symposium was held on April 21–23 2026, and served as a central meeting point during the five week long focus period, creating space for exchange between invited speakers, participants, and the broader research community.

A rapidly evolving research field

Wireless sensing is a fast-growing area with applications spanning from healthcare and smart environments to transportation and surveillance. Throughout the symposium, researchers presented recent advancements on how wireless signals can be used not only for transmission of information but also to sense and interpret the surrounding environment.

A recurring theme was Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC), an emerging paradigm expected to play a key role in future wireless systems. By integrating sensing and communication functionalities, ISAC unlocks new capabilities while introducing challenges in system design, coordination, and reliability.

Bridging theory and applications

The symposium program featured invited talks from leading international researchers, covering topics such as distributed sensing systems, localization, data-driven methods, and sensing in next-generation networks. The presentations reflected a balance between theoretical advances and practical considerations, highlighting both opportunities and remaining challenges.

Discussions throughout the event addressed fundamental questions about how to design efficient and robust systems, how to ensure security and privacy, and how to translate research results into real-world applications.

A collaborative environment

Beyond the formal sessions, the symposium fostered an open and interactive atmosphere. Informal discussions, shared activities, and social events created opportunities for participants to connect and explore new collaborations.

These interactions are a key part of the ELLIIT focus period concept, enabling deeper engagement than traditional conferences and supporting long-term research exchange.

The organization committee was pleased and left this as a thank you note after the event:

“Thanks to all speakers and visitors for the depth of the discussions and the quality of the open questions raised. The ELLIIT Focus Period on Wireless Sensing for Emerging Applications was a great success because of you. Hope this was our grain of sand for advancing wireless sensing research and development. The field moves forward, one calibrated step at a time.”
