The annual ELLIIT workshop took place in Norrköping, bringing ELLIIT researchers from all four partner universities together for two days of inspiring talks, exchange of experiences, and ideas.
This year, ELLIIT celebrates 15 years of excellent research. Director Erik G. Larsson welcomed all 180 attendees to the workshop by highlighting some of the goal fulfilment of the strategic research area, and special achievements. Today, ELLIIT supports 27 faculty positions, and 66 PhD students. The twinning of all of the PhD projects within ELLIIT is a hallmark of the research environment, and several examples of successful collaborations were presented during the first day of the workshop.
Keynote presentations were held by professors Thomas Schön and Kathryn Hess Bellwald. Thomas Schön is Beijer Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Information Technology at Uppsala University, and his talk was titled ”Clinical signals and theoretical insights: Exploring the principles and practice of AI”. It explored how deep learning is transforming both clinical practice and fundamental research. Kathryn Hess Bellwald is professor at the Laboratory for Topology and Neuroscience at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. Her talk ”On Mice and Men” described her and colleagues’ work on automation of classification of neuron morphology, how neurons are composed. Recent work includes the comparison and characterization of differences in human and rat neurons, and of the networks they form.
There and back again
The second day of the two day-workshop started off with a parallel poster session, and special shows in the dome theater at the Visualization Center in Norrköping. Professor Anders Ynnerman took the participants on a live journey, via the international space station, to the very edge of the mappable universe. A couple of sneak peeks from future productions in the dome brought the audience back to earth.
The workshop was concluded by mini workshops in smaller groups, to further discuss twinning, new initiatives, and the possibilities the ELLIIT environment offers.
